Fulfilment
“Fulfilment is satisfaction or happiness as a result of fully developing one's abilities or character, it is the achievement of something desired, promised, or predicted”.
The other day, I overheard a conversation between two young people. It sounded as if she did not have much to live for anymore. She was no more than 21 years old, and yet she did not know how to go on living. She came up with a radical solution to her existential crises – if I understood correctly, her plan was to smoke illegal substances over and over again to numb her pain until she ceased to exist. Her hopes and ambitions were almost non-existent.
Striving for self-fulfilment gives meaning to our lives. A key to fulfilment is achieving one’s personal desires. First, we have to find out what we truly want from life, and what we can offer in return. It does not really matter where we live; the level of our happiness depends on our internal world and on our goals in life.
Counselling can help us with that. I feel that the young woman on the bus should contact my office; together, we would be able to work on improving her life and her sense of fulfilment. The tendency to succeed in life is in all of us; it depends on our willingness to work towards it whether we achieve it or not.
